Creation of the Magna Carta

The Manga Carta was written by King John's subjects, who forced him to sign it. It was the first major challenge to power of the absolute monarchy. It took power from the King, especially regarding taxes and his control on his subjects' personal lives, and aided the founding of Parliament. -
Petition of Right

The Petition of Rights stated that loans and taxes could not be created only through the King, but must have consent from Parliament. It also reviewed unlawful imprisonment and gave representation to Parliament leading to a constitutional monarchy. -
Grand Remonstrance

The Grand Remonstrance was a list of grievances against Charles I that was passed by the House of Commons. It called for many things including abolishment of illegal court and taxes. Charles I refused to sign it, causing the Civil War. -

The English Civil War was a conflict between Parliament and Royals. It ended in 1651 with victory going to the Parliamentary, allowing an increase of Parliament's power over the monarchy. -
Rump Parliament

The Rump Parliament became the power of England and created the High Court of Justice, which was used to try Charles I. Parliament tried to negotiate with Charles I, but he only wanted to gain his power back. Charles went to trial and was sentenced to death, showing that Parliament had the most power. -
Glorious Revolution

King James was overthrown by Parliament and William III during this bloodless revolution. William and Mary took over and established policies of religious tolerance and granted citizens civil liberties. Marked the official beginning of a shift to a constitutional monarchy. -
Establishment of Bill of Rights

Passed by Parliament and signed by William and Mary. It declared Parliament had more power than the King and gave the subjects specific liberties, such as freedom of speech.
