East India Company Rule
To start off, the British wanted to take control of India, but didn't know how. So they started the East India Company and made the Mughal rulers give their power to them. The Indians didn't like this company and the way it was governed. They didn't like that this seemed to be a threat to the way they used to live their life. Also, they didn't like anything that went along with the rule like how they couldn't sell their food, causing famine and the their old industries disappeared. -
The Sepoy Rebellion
A sepoy is an Indian solider that is under the British order and control. So, the Sepoy Rebellion was started by an Indian and came as a shock to Britain. The main thing that started the rebellion was the whole deal with Hindus not being able to touch pork and the cow being sacred to their religion. The British, who gave them their weapons, were using pork and beef fat to load their weapons. The Hindus and Muslims then were discusted and that is the start of the Sepoy Rebellion. -
Mohandas Gandhi
Mohandas Gandhi was actually a sucessful man when he was younger. He used to be a lawyer, but he found that he didn't wasn't doing as well as he could. So, he South Africa and that is when it all happened. He forgot his middle class ranking and dressed as someone who was poor. He started a nonviolence resistence and as he got older became well known for he peaceful acts. Gandhi is a remarkable smart, man. -
Formation of the Indian National Congress
The Indian National Congress was formed to get the rights for Hindus. At the time, they were under the British rule and the Hindus didn't have a lot of rights. So, the members wanted to have a bigger part in the British policy for India. -
Formation of the Muslim League
This was founded to help the Islamic Indians have and keep their interests. Also, they wanted to safeguard political rights of the Muslims in India. -
Salt March
The Salt March started when Britian, who was in control, told the Indians can't make anymore salt. So, Gandhi started the Salt March while people joined his march along the way to the ocean. Once they got their, they started to make their salt. Once the police found out about this, they arrested everyone involved. The outcome of this was the the British became weary if they should keep India under their control or not. -
Quit India campaign
When World War II was going on, the British wanted the Indians to fight for them in the war. The Indians said that they would, but only if they would get their independence. The British replied with no and the Quit India movement started. This was a policy where the Indians wouldn't work with the British to hope that they would quit India. -
Hindu-Muslim Conflict
During this time, the hate and seperation between the two seperate groups started to grow. The Hindus and the Muslims had many differences and the Muslims didn't like that they weren't being respected. So, to overcome this the Muslims wnated their own country to have to themselves. -
Indian Independence Act
To end all conflicts in India, the Indian Independence Act was designed to help both Muslims and Hindus out. The Muslims got Pakistan and the Hindus got India. Also, the British were no longer in control. Now, everything sounds great but, the Hindus and Muslims started violence because of fear and everyone then started moving to their seperate nations will causeing deaths. -
Gandhi Assassinated
To end all of this, Gandhi was killed. He was hurt by all of this violence because he believed in nonviolence and thought that the independence of India wasn't a good choice. At on of his many prayers, he was shot by a Hindu because he was said to be a victim of violence and didn't care about the Hindus anymore.
