Gifted education in New York
Brooklyn Tech is established, followed by Bronx High School, Hunter College and Stuyvesant High school. These schools address gifted learners using philosophy, math and science. Students participate in the Intel competition. These schools serve 12,000 New York students annually. -
San Diego Develops Gifted Education Programs
After screening students, sixteen elementary schools are designated as centers for the gifted. In 1974, there were 37 programs serving gifted students. Programs were created to help gifted students with adjustment issues and test were adapted to help identify giftedness in underrepresented populations. -
Gifted program created
Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth is created and helps develop programs that allow gifted students to test out of high school classes and enroll in college when it is academically appropriate for them. -
The Marland Report
In a post-Sputnik world, the U.S. congress orders an assessment and recommendation on the state of education for gifted learners. States start to develop plans that become policies enacted regarding gifted education. -
Chicago School System Addresses Gifted Education
The city of Chicago has a gifted program that serves 25,000 students. It has 40 citywide options and 518 local programs including docent internships, cultural enrichment and mentorships.
