Nullification Crisis and the Tariff Of 1828
This was a crisis during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. This also invloved South Carolina and the federal goverment. South Carolina declared that the Tariffs of 1812 and 1832 were unconstitutional. When the crisis was over both sides cliam victory. A tariff is a tax on goods imported from foreign countries. The purpose of the Tariff of 1812 was to provide more protection to the industialists and manufacturers in the North by increasing duties on imported good from Britian by 50%. -
Wilmot Proviso

This was the 19th presidential election. It was also the immediate outbreak of the civil war. The U.S had been dividing during the 1850s surrounding slavery and rights to slave owners. The Republican Party that was dominant in the north secured most of the votes. This was able to put Abraham Lincoln as President; with almost no Southern support. -
