    At Jesus Christ's last supper, he broke Passover tradition by offering the bread and wine to his disciples as his body and blood, telling them it is a symbol of his sacrifice that is to come, and to remember him through it.

    The Eucharist moves from being a meal tradition to worship

    Gradually the apostles spread the Eucharist celebration, and from there it slowly evolved from a pre-meal thing to a religious rite, developing a scripture and structure. However, Communion was mostly held in peoples homes due to the Christian persecution.

    Christian extensive persecution stopped

    Constantine the Great, then the Emperor of Rome, gave freedom to Christians and funded many Basilicas with the function of Eucharistic worship. Vestments became commonplace for Eucharistic communion.

    in 1215 the Church affirming Christs Real Presence. It introduced transubstantiation, meaning that the Eucharist bread becomes the very being of Christ.

    Martin Luther's reformations

    German Martin Luther reforms the Protestant Christian faith, challenging the Catholic church teachings. In the reformations he denies Eucharistic transubstantiation, saying that nothing is passed on or changed in Holy Communion and the passing of the eucharist.

    Council of Trent

    The Council of Trent was convened to condemn the reformed protestant doctrines, and to reaffirm the catholic doctrine. By the end of the council, the precise nature and number of holy sacraments had been confirmed, ambiguity on the veneration of saints and relics was cleared, purgatory was cleared up, and the authority of the pope was affirmed.

    Pope Pius X encourages communion

    Pope Pius X encourages use of the Gregorian chant in mass, and pushes frequent communion. He also lowered the age for first communion to 7 years old.

    Vatican II

    The second Vatican council, or the 21st ecumenical of the Roman Church, opened the catholic church to the modern world. They updated the liturgy, gave a larger role to laypeople (non ordained persons), and introduced the religious freedom concept, starting dialogue with other religions.
