ESS IB Timeline

By edeasy
  • 1968 - IB Is Founded

The IB program was founded in Geneva, Switzerland
  • 1994 - MYP Program Created

In 1994, the IB program expanded to include the Middle Years Program. This allowed students aged 11 to 16 to become IB practitioners where they learned how to apply what they learned in the classroom to real world situations.
  • 2017 - International Presence in over 100 schools

The IB program is now being used in over 4700 schools across 153 different countries.
  • 2030 - Fluid MYP to DP Pathway

I think that there will be a more fluid pathway for students moving from the MYP program to the DP program. I taught MYP Biology this past school year and we never did a lab that would serve as a scaffold for the future IA experiments students would start in their 11th grade years. Students should be introduced to these terms and projects earlier on so they are more prepared for the DP. Changing MYP goals/criteria could help achieve this.
  • 2040 - More Interdisciplinary Courses

ESS is a course that incorporates almost every field of science (earth science, biology, chemistry) as well as politics, psychology, anthropology, etc. I think more and more IB courses like ESS will start to be offered that are more interdisciplinary because that is how life actually works. One of the goals of IB is to prepare students for the real world so interdisciplinary courses will achieve that.
  • 2050 - Removal of IB Exams

I think that the IB will move away from exams and focus more on project-based learning such as IA experiments, as many studies have shown that to be a more effective way of assessing learning. This is something I also hope to see because I personally don't like to teach to a test. Additionally, with access to the internet/technology, people no longer need to memorize facts. Instead, they will learn how to effectively use the internet/technology to access that information.
