Kilby earned his master of science from the University of Wisconsin-Extension in Milwaukee.

While working at Centralab, an electronic manufacturing company, Kilby aided in making parts of hearing aids, radios, and televisions.

Kilby realized he needed to work for a bigger company so he applied to Texas instruments and was accepted. He began working at Texas Instruments in Dallas in the summer of 1958.

Kilby came up with the design for the integrated circuit six months before Noyce had a similar idea for the integrated circuit.

Jack Kilby's wife, Clair, filed for his patent. However, on April 25, 1961 the patent was granted to Robert Noyce, who filed for a patent in July of 1959, because Kilby's was still being analyzed.

After receiving Haggerty's idea Kilby produced a handheld calculator that was almost what Haggerty had envisioned. The calculator could only do four tasks; add, subtract, multiply and divide. The calculator weighed more than 2 pounds and cost $150.

Jack Kilby died from cancer in Dallas, Texas.

After Jack Kilby received the Nobel Prize in 2000, 10 years after Noyce died, Kilby stated, “If he were, I suspect we’d share this prize.”

Jack Kilby was a gifted engineer and began to display his talents while he attended Texas Instruments where he worked alongside Pat Haggerty and Willis Adcock. Kilby was the first to come up with the idea for the first integrated circuit, however around the same time Robert Nolby aso had the same idea.

After many patents and lawsuits, today they are known as co-inventors of the first integrated circuit. Kilby also aided in the production of the handheld calculator after receiving Haggerty's vision for the calculator. Jack Kilby was greatly recognized for his contributions as seen in the multiple awards he had been given.
