  • Initiative Vs. Guilt

    Layla (age 4) has grown to love love drawling and in her excitement to draw a picture for her mom accidentally drew on important papers. Layla was scolded for ruining something important.
    In Erikson's third stage initiative vs guilt the child begins to plan things out purposefully such as drawling a picture for their parent but can overstep by not drawing on the right thing. When scolded or faced with criticism the child experiences guilt.
  • Identity vs Identity Confusion

    After months of debating Layla (age 17) decides to apply for a performing arts college despite her fathers wishes for her to follow his footsteps and go to law school.
    In Erikson's fifth stage Identity vs identity Confusion the adolescent attempts to figure out who they are and if they can't they are faced with identity confusion.
  • Intimacy vs Isolation

    Layla (age 28) decides to accept her boyfriend's proposal and offer to move in together.
    In Erikson's 6th stage of intimate vs. isolation young adults a faced with the choice of being in a relationship and being vulnerable to other individuals or deciding not to partake in intimate relationships and staying isolated from intimacy.
