EIA's
An EIA stands for "environmental Impact Assessment" . It is used to assess the impact that a man-made Scheme can have environmentally, for example creating a forest or making a golf course. It takes into account biotic, abiotic, microbial and scenic factors of the development. EIA's are often part of the planning process that the government/law set out when large environmental developments are considered. refer to google drive for more.... -
Mosquitos
WHO banned the use of DDT in 1970. DDT is a persistent organochlorine insecticide which is used to kill malaria mosquitos. DDT is very effective against the mosquitos, however, it thins the shells of wild nesting birds. This has a cascade effect on the wildlife lower in the food chain under these birds of prey. DDT is cheap and persistent and good at the job so a lot of people still use the chemical to fight maleria in mosquitos. Refer to page 53 on text book. -
Montreal Protocol.
Ozone-depleting substance (ODS).
The solution was that no one uses CFC and that after a few years the HCFC would be used. This was very high in greenhouse gasses.
The CFC is a powerful ODS and used in refrigerating technology and many sprays. This was damaging the ozone. The international community agreed to use HCFC as a solution although research then showed how high its greenhouse gas effect was. This, therefore, creates climate change.
