    Charles II ascended to the throne when the monarchy was restored in 1660. He adored the Sun King, Louis XIV; he patronized Royal Society, which was an association of scientists and intellectuals.

    From the Glorious Revolution to Queen Anne

    A revolution happened because the monarch was chosen by the Parliament and not by "divine right". This revolution has been called the "Bloodless Revolution". The Toleration Act and the Bill of Rights were enacted. During Queen Anne's reign the Act of Union passed.

    The reigns of George I and George ll. George I had to rely on ministers since he spent most of his life in Hanover. Sir Robert Walpole was the most important and powerful one. During George ll's reign there was the War of the Austrian Succession, between Austria and Prussia.
