First oil well also discovers gas.
Link In 1859 Edwin L. Drake had the first oil well drilled near Titusville, Pennsylvania it also discovered gas and proved that gas could be safely transported from its underground source for practical purposes. The well went down 69 feet before it hit natural gas. -
Bunsen Burner

In 1885 Robert Bunsen created a burner that mixed natural gas with air in the right proportions that created a flame that could safely be used for heating and cooking. This opened up new uses for natural gas for the industry to expand on. -
Natural Gas Boom
link From 1885 to 1886 the same wild speculation and mania that came with the discovery of oil happened with natural gas albeit on a smaller scale again occured in Pennsylvania. -

Before 2000 only low production wells had been completed after this drilling and fracking began for wells that would in turn have a higher return rate. -

Total gas and oil wells in Pennsylvania

Since 1859 a total of 350,000 wells have been drilled in Pennsylvania as of today 60,000 of those wells are still thought to be able to be used. While many of the wells were originally after oil they also recovered natural gas in the process.
