Apartheid required black people to carry passbooks around that had there name date of birth and photo. When protesters show up at sharpeville police station without there passbooks. A riot goes down and sixty nine people were killed by the police. -

Due to apartheid South Africa was expelled from the United Nations
Due to the apartheid that was happening in South Africa they were not allow them back. The United Nations would not let them back until apartheid ended in 1994 -
More than 600 students killed in the Soweto Massacre.
High school students of Soweto start a protest for a bette4 education for black people. The police break up the protest but wit( tear gas and bullets, over 600 high school students were killed. -

The musician Steven Van Zandt forms Artist United after touring South Africa. The album “sun city” had multiple songs on that were about being against apartheid -
Nelson Mandela released from prison
After 27 years in prison Nelson Mandela is finally released. Mandela thanks the president de Klerk for helping setting him free. But there is still a lot more work to be done about apartheid. -
Nelson Mandela becomes president of South Africa
In the first election they allowed whites and blacks to vote, Nelson Mandela was elected president. He was also the first black president of South Africa
