Francis Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated on the 28th of June 1914, their wedding anniversary. A bomb was thrown in the open roofed car they were driving in. It did not kill them. They were then shot dead by one of the terriest from The Black Hand.

The Christmas Truce was around for a couple of days at the Christmas period. Insted of shooting eachother, the soldiers got out of their trenches, and shook hands, shared cigaretts and shared food with the other side. Germany even put up a Christmas tree. This was just a 1914 phenomenon though.

Every year since then, we now celebrate ANZAC Day. It is a national public holiday, on the 25th of April, where everyone celebrates and remembers the soldiers that fought and sacrificed their lives for the country. War memorials hold ceremonies, marched and parades.

GALLIPOLI The Battle of Gallipoli took place on the 25th of April 1915. Winston Churchill, (The First Lord of Admiralty) pushed for the idea of the Australian and New Zealand Troops to land in Gallipoli, take over the peninsula and then control the Dardanelles Strait, which was the main shipping channel for the German army. Although it was a good idea, the planning behind it was poor. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) disembarked on the wrong beach in the Gallipoli peninsula.

The soldiers were supposed to land in a much longer and flatter shore, compared to the small beach surrounded with mountains they did land on. The Turkish were in control of those mountains and were able to shoot down at the troops, killing numerous soldiers. The whole Gallipoli operation cost 26,111 Australian casualties.
