He was very good at making nails and eventually started his own business making nails. His business hit off because nails weren’t easy to get during the war.

The news about their cotton gin was getting around and many fake replicas of the cotton gin were made. Eli Whitney went to court and asked to make the cotton gin his own but was denied. Eli and Phineas wanted to be the only ones to make the cotton gin and tried again in court ten years later and won.

When the machine takes away the cotton or lint when its cleaning the seed, the cotton and lint is made into cotton thread. The cotton gin could make more cotton in an hour than what several workers could do in the days work. He also applied for a patent on the cotton gin and he recieved it on March 14, 1794.

He told his dad how long it took him to make it and how much money he was offered. Eli said that he didn’t take the money because he wanted to make his machine better.

    The patent act of 1793 allowed secretary of state to give patents to anyone with that has all the required things needed. Eli asked for a patent on June 20, 1793. Eli got his patent for his cotton gin on March 14, 1794. Eli’s machine company ended in 1797.

    In the middle of the 1800s cotton had increased in manufacturing because of the cotton gin. In 1840, there was over one billion packages of cotton made. To make all the cotton and make the amount wanted, Southern people were being made slaves. The cotton had brought back slavery in the United States.

Slavery also increased because the want for cotton became so big since it didn't take long to clean. People wanted to sell cotton to get money so they needed more land and slaves. The more land and slaves people got the bigger the citites got.

    In New Haven, Conneticut, Eli Whitney had died at the age of 60. His grave is in New Haven at the Grove Street Cemetary.

    Eli Whitney has a museum that was made in honor of him. It was built in 1979 and was made to teach people about what Eli Whitney did. The museum and workshop is located where Whitney built an American factory. He built the building in 1798 and it was one of the only American factories at this time.
