Porter resigns from the US army and joins the Confederates after learning of his homestate Georgia's secession.

Porter used signals to warn of Union movement and signaled to Col. Nathan Evans "Look out for your left, your position is turned", which meant they were going to be attacked at their left flank. Reinforcements were sent.
