Brown V. Board of Education
Brown V. Board of Education was the very start of desegregation
in public schools. For the first time, colored students are shown
the government's support of desegregating schools. This
supreme court case was a part of the start of the Civil
Rights Movement.

Civil Rights Act
The Civil Rights Act, signed by Lyndon Johnson, enforced
public desegregation based on race, color, religion, sex, and
national origin. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was committed
in giving all students equal opportunity. Lyndon Johnson made
this act in order to bridge the gap of the disadvantaged children
to the advantaged children. -
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA was established in order to protect students'
privacy of their education records. This law administers
to all schools that receive funds under an applicable
program of the Department of Education. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Not January 1, just the year 1975
IDEA was made in order to fund special education and
protect the rights of students with disabilities. IDEA ensure
students with disabilities have the right to a free and
appropriate education.

The Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act
Not January 1, just the year 1980
The Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act states
that all school/district employees are required to be
mandatory reporters. This means suspicious cases
of neglect and abuse must required by school/district
employees, as well as other certain careers. All
school employees are trained in how to properly
identify signs of neglect and abuse.

No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
Not January 1, just the year 2001
NCLB is a reform that was made to the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act in order to have accountability
for results, doing what works best based on scientific
research, enlarging parental options, and increasing local
control and flexibility. NCLB really focuses on early
childhood education in order to prevent potential hardships
later on in a student's education journey. -
Common Core Standards
Not January 1, just the year 2009
Common Core Standards are learning goals in the
subjects of Language Arts/English and Mathematics
that should be learned by the end of each grade.
Common Core Standards don't specify how these
standards are taught because it is known that students
do not all learn the same way.
