  • The ASD

    The first and the oldest school for the deaf and is still operating. It temporally closed in the Fall of 1816 and re-opened again. It is also the first school to receive federal aid from the government in the amount of $300,000. The school started teaching American sign language which is derived from the methodical signs language of the French Institute for the Deaf.
  • School for the Blind

    School for the Blind
    the first school founded for people with visual impairment in the United States. The school is in Watertown Massachusetts. It was originally named New England Asylum for the Blind. The Books were manufactured in braille which is a tactile way of writing used by the blind. Their goal was to help everyone with visual impairment by creating equal opportunities Perkins school has expanded over the years and now has online resources.

    ESEA
    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act is considered a far reaching legislation affecting education. The act provides funding and emphasizes equal access to education.
  • PARC v. Commonwealth of PA

    PARC v. Commonwealth of PA
    It guarantees the right for children with disabilities to have an education. The district court of Pennsylvania decided to settle the case quickly. The following year Philadelphia was forced to follow in the footsteps of Pennsylvania guaranteeing the education of children with disability.
  • Section 504

    Section 504
    Considered the first law to protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was a major step towards the protection of disable individuals.
  • The Edu for All Handicapped Children Act

    The Edu for All Handicapped Children Act
    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act helps children with disabilities by protecting infants, toddlers, children, and youth by meeting their individual needs in education. One free meal a day is given to students with mental and physical disabilities. An evaluation by public school must be done to help the child with disabilities and create an educational plan. According to the act parents who are not satisfied can dispute decisions and seek legal help regarding their child education.
  • Honig v. Doe

    Honig v. Doe
    The Supreme Court ruled that the California School Board violated the EAHCA when they suspended a student with a disability. The law is meant to protect students from expulsion due to their disability, and states must provide services when the school fails to do so.
  • Cedar Rapids SD v. Garret F

    Cedar Rapids SD v. Garret F
    The school needs to provide students with any nursing assistance that they require in school such as nurse visits and any other supplemental care necessary to continue their education.
  • The No Child Left Behind Act

    The No Child Left Behind Act
    The Act holds schools accountable for the educational success of the student by providing standardized tests. It provides options for parents to pick other schools if the educational needs of the students are not met.
