    Council of Exceptional Children
    This is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of chiidren. They work to inform people about the education of people who have a disability. They do this by educating the public and setting various professional standardss.
  • Brown V Board of Education

    Brown V Board of Education
    This was the final decision that the supreme court ruled that separating children in public schools based on race was unconstitutional. This signaled the end of legal segregation. The Brown V Board of Education also helped to launch the civil rights movement.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    This act entitled funds to be authorized for professional development, instructional material, resources to support educational programs and the promotion parent involvement. Since then, there has been an increase in resources that are dedicated to education.
  • Handicapped Children's Early Education Act

    Handicapped Children's Early Education Act
    This law provided 75-100 model programs designed to develop successful approaches of assisting preschool aged handicapped. This program was designed to support early childhood programs and increase head start enrollment for young children with disabilities.
  • Mills V Board of Education

    Mills V Board of Education
    This was a class action suit that was brought up because seven students who were identified to have disabilities were excluded from school or denied educational services that would have helped them.   • Vocational Rehabilitation Act

    Vocational Rehabilitation Act
    This was the first civil rights legislation in the United States to protect individuals with disabilities. This Act prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in programs that are conducted by federal agencies, in programs receiving federal funding and in federal employment. This act also requires federal agencies information and communications technology to be accessible to people with disabilities.
  • The Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This act gave the right for all children to have access to free and appropriate public education in a least restrictive environment based on a students IEP. This act also required all public schools who accept federal funds to provide equal access to a free meal a day.   • Americans With Disabilities Act

    Americans With Disabilities Act
    The ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in numerous areas. These areas include employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications and access to state and local government program and services. This act also requires public places to make their programs, services and activities accessible to individuals with disabilities.
  • Cedar Rapids v Garret F

    Cedar Rapids v Garret F
    This suit was also brought on by a parent on the behalf of her son who needed an aid through out the school day which she used to provide but once the child hit the 5th grade, she asked for help. This requires school boards to provide continuous nursing services to disabled students who need them throughout the day. Schools are not responsible for services that have to be done by a physician but the services a child needs to benefit from special education must be provided without cost.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    This law held schools accountable for how kids learned and achieved. This law also penalized schools who did not make any improvements. States are required to test students in reading and math in grades 3-8 and once in high school.
