Education for students with disabilities and some personal events

  • NCSU was founded

    NCSU was founded in 1887 on the belief that the children of farmers, mechanics, and other workers should also have access to higher education. Originally founded as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education ruled that it is unconstitutional to segregate students based on race. While this was not related to the education of students with disabilities, it served as a catalyst for parents of students with disabilities to advocate for change for their children.
  • First American lands on the moon

    Apollo 11 launched to the moon. Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk the moon.
  • Congressional Investigation of 1972

    Set out to discover how students with disabilities were being served at the time. Found that 48% received an adequate education, 31% received a substandard education, and 21% were not in school at all.
  • Section 504 of the Rehibilitation Act

    This was an anti-discrimination law that stated that schools cannot deny access to education but did not go much further than that into what that education entails.
  • Public Law 94-142: The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975

    Hold states and local educational agencies accountable for providing students with disability with their right to education. Grants the right for students with disabilities to have access to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).
  • Rowley v. Board of Education

    Ruled that special education should provide some benefit but does not need to maximize the education of students. This standard held through many cases until 2017.
  • Public law 99-457, reauthorized the Education for All handicapped Children Act

    Mandated to states that services for students with disabilities begin from birth. Before this reauthorization, services began at the age of three.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This law prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities in the workforce. Made strides for students with disabilities after school. Provides equal opportunity to employment.
  • Individual with Disabilities Education Act IDEA

    Mandated students Individualized Education Program (IEP) and provides an Individual Transition Plan (ITP) to help students transition into post-secondary life. Requires confidentiality for student info.
  • NCSU men's basketball won their second national title

    Won their two titles in 1974 and 1983.
  • Olympics in Atlanta

    In 1996, Atlanta hosted the Summer Olympics. I am from Atlanta so I have seen landmarks and parks built for this reason.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA reauthoriation

    Added the general education teacher as part of the IEP team. States were given the right to expand the "developmental delay to students up to the age of nine. Students with disabilities begin to take state tests.
  • I entered the school system

    I entered pre-school as a student in Witchita Kansas in 2004.
