  • Brown v Board of Education

  • Public Law 88-164

    This law provided funds for training professionals to work with children with special needs and for research of best practices for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.   • Learning Disabilities Assoication of America Founded

    This association was founded in 1963 during a conference in Chicago. A group of parents and professionals attended who realized a common need: services for their children.

  • Rehabilitation Act of 1973: Section 504

    This act states that it is illegal to deny participation in activities or programs solely because of a disability. Children who may not receive services under IDEA 2004 may be deemed eligible under section 504. This act is a bridge between general and special education.

  • Education For All Handicapped Children Act

    This legislation ensured that handicapped children had access to free appropriate education and related services to meet their unique needs.

  • Education for All Handicapped Children Amendments

    These amendments added funds for states to develop plans and programs for children and their families from birth to age 2. This changed the title of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act extended the civil rights acts to individuals with disabilities. This act along with others ensures that children with disabilities receive equal access to educational resources and cannot be discriminated against based on their disabilities.

  • Public Law 107-110: No Child Left Behind Act

    This piece of legislation was focused not focused on students with disabilities, however, they still benefitted greatly from it. It held schools and educators accountable for bringing students to the minimum level of competency.

  • Individuals with Disabilities Act, IDEA 2004

    This is the reauthorization of the Education for all Handicapped Students. It ensures special education and related services. It also required special education specialists to hold full certification, strengthened IEP standards, and added transition planning. Later in 2015 through the Every Student Succeeds Act it was reamended.

  • American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

    This legislation resulted in large funds being provided to states under IDEA on a one-time basis. The purpose was to improve the delivery of quality of early intervention services.

  • Every Student Succeeds Act
