Nativists were people who opposed immigrants because theey thought they took their jobs and would out-vote them. The "KNow Nothing Party" was one of the nativist political parties. -

Lowell System
The duaghters of farmers in New Egngland worked in factories then later became housewives. Strikes later occured due to poor wages and working conditions. -
Cotton gin invented
Invented by Eli Whitney in 1793, the cotton gin machine quickly separates the seeds from the cotton. Because of its remarkable productivity, it allowed for more cotton to be processed and encouraged the southern slave trade. Once the cotton was ready it went to the northern factories, so this also helped the northern states conomies. -
Wage Slaves
Wage slaves were workers in the northern factories that worked in poor conditions, for long hours, for low wages. There were many strikes later led by wage slaves. -
Steamboats invented
INvented in 1807, the steamboat allowed for easier transportation along canals and rivers in the U.S. -
Transportation Revolution
Different forms of transportation began appearing including turnpikes, canals, railroads, etc. This began a large transportation business (many travelers) and also helped the transportation of manufactured goods. -
Tariff of 1816
A tariff passed by Congress to protect U.S. manufactured goods from competition when overseas. The money gained from the tariffs was used to improve transportation in the U.S. -
German Immigrants
Coming to the U.S. for different reasons like political freedom and religous reffuge, the Germans went moslty to the Northwest. They also had fatorie jobs and other needed jobs at the time. -
The American System
An economic plan that supported tariffs, the national bank, and internal improvements (roads, canals, etc.). It was introduced by Henery Clay and was meant to strengthen the economy. -
Henry Clay
Henry Clay was a Senator and House Rep. for Kentucky, a lawyer, and a planter. He developed bothe the AMerican System and the MIssouri Compermise. -
Erie Canal
A canal, completed in 1825, that goes through NY and was built to connect the Hudson River to the Great Lakes. It made trade easier for New York, therefore helping their economy. -
McCormick Reaper
Invented by Robert McCormrick in 1827, the reaper machine was developed to cut crops. The machine allowed for farmers to harvest crops easier and fster, boosting the economy. -
National Road
The National Road was the frist offical highway in the U.S. This road made for easier transportation west and connected some major rivers together. -
Steel plow
The first steel plow was created by John Deere in 1837 and replaced the cast-iron plow. This plow made field plowing easier and quicker, contributing to more productive farming. -
Samuel Morse
He created Morse code and developed the single-wire telegrahp system in the U.S. The telegraph contributed to communtioation in the U.S. greatly. After the invention of it, information was able to quickly move from place to place. -
Railroads
The first steam engine was made in 1830 and not long after railrodas were built. The rialroas made it possible for many people to kove westward. -
Commonwealth v. Hunt
This was a 1842 MA Supreme Court case that established that labor unions and labor strikes were both legal. The unions and strikes later became very common for the workers working in poor conditions in factories. -
Irish Immigrants
Came to U.S. due to the potato famine. Were willing to work in the factories in the north. -
Pony Express
Lasting from 1860-61, this mail delivery service connected the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Riders would gallop on their horses to a station and then switch until the final desistnation was met.
