The Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan after being stopped by multiple countries that intervened in the war. As a result of the invasion, the Soviet Union entered into an economic recession. -

Both countries accused each other of military buildup near the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russia was afraid that the country of Georgia might be planning an attack.
