henry ford introduced the assembly line to automobile production in 1914. the assembly line, the use of standarized parts, & other labor-saving devices made in american industry more efficient and productive. -

when men went off to WWI to fight in 1917, millions of women took their places in factories and mines. -
roaring twenties/ WWI
The bombings also whipped up a red scare frenzy topped only by racial violence. When blacks returned from war, many feared the soldiers would demand their rights and lynched to preempt a civil rights movement. Likewise, labor launched many strikes against capital, but the public suspected communists. The public reaction destroyed the labor movement. It took the GrBy 1920, these events weighed heavily on the country as a depression struck. Disillusioned, Americans wanted life to return to normal. -
Rise Of Nativism
the "Red scare" contributed to the rise of nativism-- a dislike of foreigners. some foreigners suspected of having radical sympathetic were deported. Some parts of the country even saw a revival of the Ku Klux Klan. -
The Roaring Twenties
The twenties began darkly as the Wilson malaise engulfed the nation. A flu pandemic, red scare, race riots, economic depression, and disillusionment swept the country. People wanted to escape Wilson and international entanglements and focus on living. After expunging Wilson, the country entered into an economic and cultural boom, which lasted until the Stock Market collapsed in 1929 -
Hoover fails to halt the depression
Most historians state that President Hoover did little while the Great Depression decimated the U.S. However Hoover actually initiated more government involvement in the economy than any other peacetime president up to that time. In fact, Hoover’s interventionist policies not only failed to stop the downward economic spiral following the stock market crash of 1929, but they made the spiral worse. -

Cause of the great depression
1.) Overproduction- The 1920's witnessed the rapid expansion of new products like cars, radios, and refrigerators. Many consumers lacked the money to buy these goods. 2.) Stock market crash-October 29th, 1929 the stock market crashed. People fraintically tried to sell all thier stocks, as share prices plunged. The effects of the crash quickly spread. -
Franklin D. Roosevelt
He defeated Hoover in the presidential election of 1932. Roosevelt promised a "New Deal" to put Americans back to work. -
Relif Recovery & Reform
Relief- Many of the unemployed were without food or shelter. Roosevelt favored providing emergeny public jobs. This government spending was also meant to boost economy.(1933)
Recovery- Measures were designed to restore the economy by increasing incentives to produde & by rebuilding peopls purchasing power.
Reform- Measures were aimed at remedying defects in nations economy to ensure that another depression would never strike again. These measures still affect us today. -

During the war, the U.S government faced the task of mobilizing American manpower & production to meet its enormous wartime needs. -
Forced Internment Of Japanese- Americans
The attack of Pearl Harbor created fear among many Americans, especially on the West Coast, that Japanese Americans might commit acts of sabotage. -
Cold War Era (1945-1960)
The years after the WWIIwere generally a period of recovery and economic growth. People whose lives had been disrupted by WWIi settled down to work and have families. -
The Prosperous 1950's
*Growth of suburbs- developers built inexpensive mass-produces homes, leading to the growth of suburbs.
*Economic Prosperity- Americans ecperienced unparelled prosperity as the world's greatest producer of goods.
*Confirmity- Fear of communism added to emphasize the values of family life & conformity. -
Space Race
The soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made satelite, into space. With space missiled, the Soviet Union would have the ability to fire nuclear weapons at the United States from across the globe.
