Ellen Swallow Richards, the founder of FCS creates the first school lunch programs in Boston schools. Students would pay one penny a day to receive lunch provided by the school. This program now known in history as the "penny lunch program", was the start of Family and Consumer Science ideals in schools.

This organization created in 1909 by a group of women in upstate New York changed the standard of home economics from male-dominated to an equal playing field. The creation of this organization was founded by a group of conferences known as "The Lake Placid Conferences", where this group of women met each month to discuss the health of the family unit in the home.

FCS now combines what is learned in home economics and career and technical classes for students looking to find their future careers.

With the change of home economics to FCS, it was only appropriate for the group Future Home Makers of America to also change their name to fit the ever-growing complex program of FCS. The term FCCLA was adapted to show that students are Future Career and Community Leaders of America, rather than just homemakers.

The Body of Knowledge table is set up to help students evaluate careers related to Family and Consumer Science Courses, and to show students there is a future in FCS careers.
