The rock falls provided the Aboriginal People with a natural river crossing and a place to trap migrating fish,. This place was also a place where the Wurrendjiri people would trade. -
Charles Grimes explores the Yarra River
Charles Grimes was sent on a boat to inspect the area. On 20 January, 1803 he entered Port Philip Bay, and later on 18 February 1803, he explored the Yarra River, apart of Dights Falls. -
Melbourne was Settled
The city of Melbourne began to grow and populate. -
John Dight buys Land near the Yarra River
In 1839, John Dight, a flour miller bought a block of land next to the river. He had his own flour business, and was looking to increase it more. -
John Dight moved to Port Phillip
John Dight's flour mill business was a success for a year, until he moved to Port Philip. -
John Dight builds a Weir
Later in 1841, he built a water powered mill. He built a small weir (dam) next to the boulders of the river to maintain water for the mill. The mill was later destroyed by a fire in the 1900's. -
The Weir was Upgraded
In 1895, the weir was upgraded and bought for the Melbourne Flour Milling Company. -
The Weir was a Big Obstacle for Fish and a Fish Ladder was Made
In 1993, Melbourne Water realised that the weir was a big obstacle for fish that migrated up the Yarra River. They removed the weir and installed a fish ladder. Constructions began in 2010 and finished in 2012. The fish ladder was a big success as the fish could migrate up the river without the weir in their way.
