First US School for the Blind: Perkins School for the Blind
Was established by John Dix Fisher and, founding director, Samuel Gridley Howe. It was created to help children, who were blind, to discover and relate to their world. It helped them have successful futures. -
Gallaudet University
Congress authorized the land that was given in 1856, that housed 12 Deaf and 6 Blind students, to be legitimized as, Confer College. President Lincoln signed a Bill that named Gallaudet the president of the institution, giving it it's current name. This was the first opportunity for Deaf and Blind students to receive a higher education. -
Treloar's School for Disabled Students
Treloar created this school as a charity for the community. It provides education, care, therapy, medical support, and independence training for children; 2-25 years old. It's main goal is to nurture children's abilities and to prepare them for the next stages in their lives. Most of its income comes from fees, local authority, or donations; but they have to raise more money to keep in the forefront of education for children with disabilities. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
Was put into place by Congress and required all public schools, that received funding, to provide equal access to education, as well as one free meal a day, to any student with physical or mental disabilities as proven by a doctor. This also required schools to provide administrative measures for parents to dispute discussions made about their child's education. -
Deaf President Now Protest
This happened because the Universities Board of Trustees announced that a hearing person was going to be their 7th president and the students were against it. This was such an issue because, 2 of the 3 finalist for the presidential position were qualified Deaf candidates and the students were enraged. The students petitioned the Board, but they were ignored. Because of this, the students boycotted classes and started a protest in which they gave a list of four demand. -
Americans with Disabilities Act ADA
The nation's first extensive civil rights law that addressed the needs of all people with disabilities. It prohibited discrimination from employment or public services. It created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission,EEOC, which enforced all of the new requirements. -
International Disability Alliance
Created to be a network of global and regional organizations for people with disabilities and their families. Their goal is to streamline each countries disabilities programs and laws so that all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA
The purpose of IDEA is to provide a free and appropriate public education to students with disabilities. It also provides individualized educations programs such as IEPs and 504s. It also lets parents and students have participation in the decision making process of how their education is structured and supported. Lastly, it created safe guards to protect the rights of parents and children. -
