Birth to 3 months
Pauses nursing as a result of sounds. Smiles, coos, cries as a form or communiation. -
4 - 6 months
Starts to laugh and makes babbling or gurgling sounds. Smiles when he/she recognizes familiar face. Also has different cries for different instances. -
7 months to one year
Listens and understands words or simple commands. Has began to acquire 1 or two simple words. -
1 - 2 years
Learns new words as well as puts together simple sentences such as, "Where mommy?" Enjoys music and stories. Also knows some body parts. -
2 - 3 years
Speaks in an understandable way and uses familiar letter sounds as well can name common items. -
3-5 years
Can retell stories as well as answers who, what, where questions. Vocabulary increases regularly specially through attendance of preschool or Kindergarten. -
6-8 years old
Most children this age have already mastered most consonant and vowel sounds. Their language increases through exposure and reading. -
9 - 11 years old
During this phase children are able to carry on a conversation without difficulty and have mastered time concepts. -
12 - 14 years old
This a trying phase for teens since this is when they test their limits and try to excert their indepence. -
15-18 years old
During adolescence language becomes instrumental since it is during this time young adults begin their path to self-reliance.
