Problem
What are the decomposition rates for different items? The items are styrofoam, aluminum foil, sun chips bag, regualar chips bag, apple, newspaper, cotton, orange. -
Hypothesis
I believe the apple will decompose the most over the period of time. The weather has been mild at the end of this week. -
Period: to
dig
-
Procedure
We went outside and found a specific place to dig 8" to 10". Then we buried the items and covered the hole back up with dirt so the items wouldn't fly out. After that we waited till 8 weeks went by. -
Materials and Equipment
The materials and equipment we used for this project were shovels, a wooden stake, a super hammer, some marker tape, and rebar. We buried styrofoam, aluminum foil, Sun Chips bag, regualr chips bag, a apple, news paper, cotton, and a orange. -
Styrofoam
Did you that 25 trillion styrofoam cups are thrown away every year? Pure orange rind oil, d-Limonene, is known to safelty break down your styrofoam. -
Weather
Weather is a major factor on how things grow, decompose, and many other ways. This week the weather was alittle cloudy with no precipitataion. The temperature for this week averaged about the mid 60's. -
Weather
The weather was partly cloudy with a little bit of precipitation. The temperature averaged at about the low 70s. -
Aluminum Foil
Here is a way to reuse aluminum foil. You can wash the Aluminum Foil and reuse it. -
Weather
The weather has been up in the 80s and some 90s. It has been partly cloudy with no precipitation. -
Sun Chips Bag
You can reuse a chip bag by using it as a trash bag in your car.You could also reuse it by putting breakable things in the bag for transporting. -
Weather
The weather is warm with temperatures from 65-75 degrees. Somewhat cloudy with no precipitation. -
Regular chips bag
You can reuse a chip bag by making a shoulder bag, or a braclet. You can also reuse them by making them trash bag liners. -
Weather
Temperature was around mid 80s with few clouds. Their was no precipitation this week. -
Apple
You can reuse the peels of an apple by making a casserole. -
Weather
The weather for this week was pretty hot, with temperatures around 80-90 degrees. Not very cloudy and again no precipitation. -
Paper
You can reuse paper by making a book cover out of the paper. You can reuse paper by raping paper around breakables when you are moving. -
Weather
The weather has been cold and rainy. The temperature averages about 55 degrees. It has been very cloudy and we have had lots of rain. -
Cotton
You can reuse cotton by making many different types of clothes. You can also reuse cotton by sewing many things. Also by making a blanket out of cotton. -
Weather
The weather is very hot temperatures average about 85 degrees. Partly cloudy with some precipitation. -
Orange
You can reuse orange peels by using the peels to make orange peel jam.You can also reuse the orange peels by putting the peels on your radiator and it will freshen your house. -
Apple Conclusion
The apple decomposed a lot probably about 85%. The bad thing was that the apple stank like dog poop. -
Foil Conclusion
The foil did not decompose if it did all it was maybe 5%.In the picture the foil looks decomposed but it really isn't. -
Paper Conclusion
The paper decomposed a little but not a whole lot. It got really dirty though, but it probably decomposed 10%. -
Orange Conclusion
The orange decomposed quite a bit, but not as much as the orange. It decomposed probably 80%. -
Regular Chips Bag Conclusion
The regular chips bag decomposed very little. It decomposed probably about 6%. -
Cotton Conclusion
The cotton did not decompose at all. The cotton got really dirty in the ground though. -
Styrofoam Conclusion
The styrofoam decomposed probably about 23.24312%. It got split into pieces though. -
Sun Chip Bag Conclusion
The sun chip bag decomposed somewhat probably about 41.287562%. It also got torn up.
