Developmental Psychology Timeline Project

  • Birth

  • Infancy: Emotional Development

    -Were you securely or insecurely attached to your primary caregiver? ~I remember my mom telling me that me and my older brother use to cry whenever she would leave to go to work when we were little. She did say that after a little while we would be fine though. We were also fine when it came to us starting school. So I guess we were securely attached to my mother.

    -When did I start walking? ~I started walking at the age of two. My mom said that I was really good at it and once I figured out how to to walk that was all I was doing.

    -What was my temperament like as a baby? ~According to my parents I was a easy child. I was shy around strangers like most kids. Overall though I did not give my parents a lot of trouble as a kid.

    -Provide an example from your life that demonstrates at least one concept related to Piaget's stages of cognitive development. ~I used to like playing peek-a-boo when I was little. My mom told me that I would get so happy whenever she would uncover her eyes because I thought she had disappeared. This example has to do with the fact that I had not developed object permanence yet.

    ~How often did you get physical exercise? What sort of activities did you do? What were your feelings regarding them? -I got some physical exercise from playing at recess or P.E as well as played outside with my brother and my dogs. I did play some sports like softball. I was really happy about playing outside and doing the sports because I had fun. It was not that hard because I was in shape as a child.

    ~ Gross Motor/ Fine Motor skills used. -Well if I was at P.E then I was probably running back and forth. I probably played games that involved jumping as well.

    ~What sort of interests did you have as a young child.
    • I was interested in toys like dolls and games. So I guess I fit into the categorization of children.

    ~ How did family and friends/ teachers describe you as a child? Was this the same or different from your infant temperament? -They would describe me as a easy child. I did not give my parents or my teachers a hard time while I was growing up.

    ~Provide an example from your life that demonstrates at least one concept related to Piaget's stages of cognitive development.
    • When I was younger I used to like to play dress up. I also enjoyed drawing pictures on everything. This is part of Piaget's pre-operational stage. One time I drew a picture of an umbrella on my parent's bedroom wall with a sharpie.

    ~ Describe an experience that made you aware of a certain concept of intelligence? What was this concept of intelligence?
    How did this affect the way you thought about intelligence and yourself?
    • When I was in 5th grade I took a advanced math placement test to see if I could skip a section of math and be placed in a higher math class. I scored high enough to skip the section of math. This was the first time I really thought I was intelligent and it made me feel really good.

    ~What is one way you remember your parents and/or a teacher acting in a way that you know now helped your language acquisition?
    • I remember doing reading passages with my mom and her stopping me if I mispronounced something. It was annoying but it helped a lot.

    ~ Provide an example from your life that demonstrates at least one concept related to Piaget's stages of cognitive development. -During this stage in my life I was in the intuitive thought sub-stage. I can remember asking my mom why all the time. I can also remember asking my mom where babies come from and she told me that I was brought by a stork.

    ~ Provide an example from your life that demonstrates at least one concept related to Piaget's stages of cognitive development. -I was able to consider different ways and find different ways to figure out math problems as well as be able to see interrelationship between variables in a problem.

  • Adolescence: Physical Development

    ~ Did you enter puberty early or late compared to your peers and do you think it had any effect on you?
    • I believe I started puberty earlier than some of my peers did, but I do not think it effected me that much but I did have to deal with the physical things that came from puberty.

    ~ Provide an example from your life that demonstrates at least one concept related to Piaget's stages of cognitive development.
    • I have been able to use hypothetical-deductive reasoning. I was able to guess better on problems that I was unsure about the answer. I also was also super self conscious of what other people thought of me which is known as adolescent ego-centrism.

    ~ How often did you get exercise? What sort of activities did you do? What were your feelings regarding physical activity?
    • I got physical exercise everyday from P.E and from marching band practice. It wasn't as bad because I knew it was helping me in the long run because I needed to be more physically fit. I also enjoyed it because I enjoy marching band.

    ~ Describe which gross/ fine motor skills I used.
    • Well I was still in P.E so I used gross motor skills like running laps around the gym. I also used gross motor skills during marching band practice. I used fine motor skills as well during marching band as well when I am playing difficult music.

    ~ How would Sternberg have described your most important relationship in adolescence?
    • Sternberg would say that I had a secure attachment to my boyfriend at the time now fiance. He would also say that I had a romantic love with him.

    ~ Describe what gross/ fine motor skills I used to do these activities.
    • Well I am still getting gross motor skills from marching band practice and marching in football games. I also still try to go to go to the gym and run. I am still using the fine motor skills to play difficult music as well.

    ~ What is your current level of physical activity? How do you feel about it?
    • I get some physical exercise from marching band practice and occasionally when I have the time I go to the gym. I get tired while doing it because I am not in good shape, but I still do it because I know it is helping me.

    • I am not sure if I am or I will ever reach the level of formal operational stage. I still believe that I still have some adolescent ego-centrism as well as some personal fable. I am working on getting out of it.

    ~ Think of your closest relationship now whether that's a friend, family member, or romantic partner. How would you describe the attachment style?
    • Well my two closest relationships right now are my best friend and my fiance. I would also say that I have a secure attachment to both of them. I feel very comfortable in all of my relationships.

    ~ What classification of Sternberg's relationship is most appropriate now?
    • With my best friend I would say that I have a affectionate relationship with him, and I would say that I have I romantic and affectionate relationship with my fiance.
