The Committee of 99 was a de facto government that the residents of South Carolina followed instead of the royal governor. -
De Facto Government/De Jure Government
A de facto government was a government that the citizens obeyed while the de jure government was the lawful government. South Carolina’s Committee of 99 is a prime example of a de facto government because of SC’s residents obeyed the committee rather than the royal governor who was the lawful government, the de jure government. -
Provincial Congress
The Provincial Government was meant to serve as a temporary government during the Revolutionary War, it was to raise an army, issue currency, and enforce non-importation of goods. It later on selected delegates to the Second Continental Congress so the Articles of Confederation could be written. -
Treaty of Ninety-Six
The Treaty of Ninety-Six was when the Backcountry and Lowcountry signed the treaty which made all Backcountry residents neutral in the fight with England, however, it didn’t last because of the patriots sent a force to rid of Loyalists in the Backcountry. -
South Carolina’s 1st Constitution (1776)
South Carolina’s 1st Constitution was created before the Declaration of Independence signing and it was to serve as South Carolina’s law until disputes with England were resolved. -
Charles Pinckney
Charles Pinckney was an early advocate for a stronger national government. He chaired the Confederation committee that wanted to strengthen the national government under the Articles of Confederation and and also served on the committee to persuade the states to pay their debts to the national government. -
South Carolina’s 2nd Constitution (1778)
South Carolina’s 2nd Constitution was written after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it was rewritten several times to make way for new rules such as the president was now to be called the governor of South Carolina, the Church of England was no longer the official state church, and representation was slightly more equal between the Backcountry and Lowcountry. -
Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was the first national government of the United States that later caused problems because of its weakness and being unable to settle disputes in trade, economy, and taxes after the Revolutionary War. -
Henry Laurens
Henry Laurens served as the president of the Continental Congress and participated on the committee that negotiated the Treaty of Paris. -
Shays' Rebellion
The Shays' Rebellion in Massachusetts raised fears that a rebellion would occur against the national government making the states called together a convention in Philadelphia to fix the Articles of Confederation.
