Order class materials (textbooks, lab supplies, other resources)
Coursepacks vs. textbooks
• Pros: flexibility, variety of perspectives, more interesting, provide more uniform quality materials that range from a variety of text types (theory based or research reports)
• Cons: integrating all the different sources of information can be problematic, a textbook is more likely to provide students with a basic understanding of concepts through reading, gathering readings for a coursepack that is available to students is a lot of work -
Choose a textbook and reading materials
Reading materials need to fit with your objectives
Students prefer going through a textbook chapter by chapter
• Make sure you’re clear in why you are jumping around
“Research on teaching suggests that the major influence on what students learn is not the teaching method but the textbook” (14) -
Develop objectives, goals and/or outcomes
“choice of textbook, the selection of the type and order of assignments, the choice of teaching techniques, and all the decisions in course planning should derive from your objective”
Objectives should clearly point to what evidence you will gather to show that the objective has been met
Can be revised after interacting with students
Not all goals need to be assessed for a grade (i.e. motivation and attitudes) https://www.johnbiggs.com.au/academic/solo-taxonomy/ -

Begin drafting a syllabus for the course
Most student learning happens outside of the classroom= need to plan for activities and assignments out of class time
Developing a syllabus helps you start to narrow down how the objectives will be achieved given the limitations due to time, place, students, and resources -

Plan for out of class learning
• Consider how much time they are in your class, other classes they may be taking, jobs, etc.
• Plan for about 6-10 hours of in class and out of class learning total (if your course is a 3 hour class, that leaves 3-7 hours of out of class learning activities)
Need to practice the skills you are teaching -
Select appropriate technology
Make sure the technology enables students to learn more efficiently
Important consideration during the time of Covid
Limitations due to internet and available technology -
Begin lesson planning
Make sure they plan for student involvement
