In 1945, 51 countries, signed the UN Charter. The UN maintains internal peace and security, protects human rights, delivers humanitarian aid, promotes sustainable development, and upholds international law.

  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    On August 6th 1945 during WWII, an American B-29 bomber dropped the worlds first atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan. The explosion would kill over 80,000 people. Three short days later another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki Japan killing more than 40,000. On August 15th, Japan would announce its surrender in WWII.

    The Cold War, which lasted around forty-five years, was fought by the Soviet Union and the United States. During this time span the Red Scare occurred and the Cuban Missile Crisis, which ended with the signing of the Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty of 1963. However, the Cold War came to an end in 1991 when the Soviet Union converted into its component republics.

    The Korean War began on the 25th of June when the North Korean People's Army invaded the 38th parallel. The US had troops involved by July backing up South Korea. The casualties of the war were staggering at nearly 5 million deaths. The war ended when an armistice was signed on July 27 1953.

    The Vietnam war involved the US and South Korea against North Korea and lasted, during which more than 3 million people lost their lives. However, US involvement ceased in 1973. The war was ended in 1975 when North Vietnam seized control of South Vietnam and declared the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

    On November 22 shortly after noon President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. At 1pm Kennedy was pronounced dead due to gunshot wounds to the head and neck. Kennedy was left to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery.

    The Gulf War was fought between Iraq and a coalition of nations that included Kuwait, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Saudi Arabia, and more. It began when Iraq invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990 and ended with a cease fire declared on February 28, 1991.

Almost 3,000 people were killed. U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism defined the presidency of George W. Bush."
