Magna Carta
The Magna Carta limited the power of the king & proteced certain rights for the nobles. The big idea would be limited government. -
Mayflower Compact
The pilgrams were in need of government. They agreed that law will be followed by everyone. This would be a perfect example of Rule of Law. -
English Bill of Rights
The English Bill of rights expanded the rights of the Paliament even more. The big idea would be "Rights". -
John Locke
John Locke believed we were born with natural rights. The natural rights were life,liberty, & property. The big idea is "Rights". -
Cato's Letters
Cato's letter showed freedom of expression. They were letters arguing against the kings rules.The big idea would be rights. -
Montesquieu
Montesquiu believed in separation of powers. Which is when the government gets divided into different parts so everyone has equal control. -
Rousseau
Beilived in natural freedom and social freedom. In natural freedom you have complete freedom but no security. In social freeom you have freedom but you might have to give so freedom up so you can be secure. -
Common sense
Explained the arguments in a way that was easy for everyday colonists could undestand. The big idea would be rights.
