Equal treatment under the law. Trial by one's peers. Forced the king to sign an agreement. The Magna Carta limited the power of the monarch by guaranteeing that no one would be above the law, not even the king or queen. -

Mayflower Compact
The Plymouth colonist relized they needed rules to govern themselves if they were to survive in a new land. Drew up a written plan for government. -
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
This document called for an assembly of elected representatives. It also called for the popular election of a governor and judges. America's first written Constitution. -
Glorious Revolution
Parliament demonstrated that it was now stronger than the monarch. No ruler would have more power than Parliament. Parliament removed King James II from the throne. Peaceful transfer of power. -
English Bill of Rights
Futher restricted the monarch's power. Free elections to Parliament. Righ to a fair trial. Elimination of cruel and unusual punishment. -
John Locke
Locke agrued that people were born free, equal, and independent. They also possessed rights, called natural rights, to life, liberty, and property that no government could take away. -
Baron de Montesquieu
Separation of Power, the idea about dividing the branches of government into different parts to balance each other so that no one part can become too strong or threaten indiviual rights. -
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
He agrued that the people alone had the right to determine how they should be governed.
