Suez Crisis
Cross border attacks from the Egyptian- controlled Gaza Strip made Israeli leadership grow weary. The United States withdraws aid to Egypt, infuriating Nasser. He nationalizes the Suez Canal while Britain seeks to prevent the nationalization by joining with France and Israel to gain control of the water way. Fighting breaks out and United Stated demands a cease fire and reopens the canal on April 24, 1957. This solidifies the framework of the cold war. -
Six Day War
Egypt blocks Israeli ships in the Gulf of Aqaba. President Johnson of the United States fails to secure peace and reopen the Gulf. Israel focuses on pushing Syria’s troops from the Golden Heights when a U.N. cease fire takes effect. Victory provides Isreal with a buffer zone between it and it’s Arab neighbors. -
Yom Kippur War
Nasser was succeeded by Anwar Sadat. Sadat then prepares his country for war. He attacks Israel on October 6, 1973 and Israel fights back and gains most of the ground lost from the initial attack. Agreements give Egypt control of some land along the Suez Canal. -
Camp David
Clinton begins a last minute peace effort by hosting Arafat and Barak at Camp David. Tensions rise as the September deadline approaches with no set treaty. Barak was replaced as Prime Minister and negotiations were put on hold in favor of security arrangements. -
Palestinian Uprising
Palestinians were frustrated without a final peace treaty. Another uprising is launched when Ariel Sharon, a hard conservative, visits a holy sight starting months of violence among the public. There were several suicide bombing attacks and within the first year, nearly 800 are dead as a result of the violence and fighting.
