  • The Analytical Machine

    1. The first analytical machine was designed by Charles Babbage. It included an arithmetic logic unit and integrated memory which made it the first design for a general computer. The first general computers were built more than a hundred years after Babbage had proposed his analytical machine idea.

    February 15, 1946. The ENIAC was introduced to the public by the army in 1946. The inventors were Dr. John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert. ENIAC is short for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer Day. The ENIAC was for the United States army to calculate artillery firing tables.

    1. The UNIX Operating System is a stable, multi-user, multi tasking system for servers, desktops, and laptops. The most popular versions are Sun Solaris, GNU/Linux, and macOS X. Its also made up of three parts; the shell, the kernel and the programs.

    December 1974. The Altair was the world’s first personal computer. The MITS developed the Altair which sold for $395 as a kit or $495 assembled. Its referred to as a minicomputer. The computer was only able to play simple games and mathematical problems.

    1. The Cray-1 was a super-computer designed, marketed and manufactured by Cray Research. The first one was installed in Los Alamos National Laboratory which became one of the most successful super-computers in history. It can hold up to one million words of main memory. It cost $8.8 million.

    August 1981. A PC (Personal Computer) is a microcomputer designed for use by only one person at a time. It excluded other types of personal computers such as MacIntoshes. They are based on Intel microprocessor or an Intel compatible-microprocessor.

    August 1982. LANPAR was the first electronic spreadsheet on sharing computers. VisiCalc was the first electronic spreadsheet which helped turn the Apple computer into a widely used system. Excel is now the most used spreadsheet on Windows and Macintosh computers.

    November 20, 1985. Windows 1.0 was released as the first version in the Microsoft Windows line. Its founder, Bill Gates, was later disappointed to found out that Windows 1.0 did not meet critics expectations and was later unsupported by Microsoft on December 31, 2001.
