They supported states rights and argued that the national government was abusing its power and stated that states had the power over federal government to decide the constitutionality of the acts.     The underground railroad was a network of people who helped slaves escape to freedom in the north and effectivly led thousands of slaves to freedom from 1810 to 1850. This was a key event because it showed that many northern citizens disagreed with slavery, and shows that they were willing to disobey the souths rights to free the slaves, this led to increased conflicts between states.The thematic connection is beliefs and culture because it was the abolitionist belifs that slaves should be free.

    Nat Turner was a slave in southern Virginia who incited a riot and revolt he gathered up almost seventy slaves and attacked and killed 60 white people.This led to a decrease in slaves and free blacks civil rights including education and assembly, many northeners saw this as a violation of human rights and saw the harmful effects of slavery on society. This connects to beliefs because Nat Turner was able to spread his belief that retaliation was required to defeat slavery.

    Kansas was given the right to chose to be a free state or slave state in the Kansas Nebraska Act this led to many settlers migration to Kansas to express their views, bleeding Kansas was a series of bloody battles and outbursts between the pro-slavery faction and anti-slavery factions. The battles showed that the two sides were so supportive of their beliefs they would be willing to die for it, and would be a foreshadowing of the war to follow.
