In 1776, Friars Escalante and Dominquez explored north of Mexico to find a trail between Santa Fe and California. On their trip they traveled through western Colorado. They made it as far north as the White River. -
War of 1812 (US)
The United States fought another war against the British. The Americans felt that Great Britain was restricting America's growth. During the war, the British invaded and burned Washington DC. It was known as the "second war of independence." -
Texas Republic (Colorado)
Texas became an independent country when it separated from Mexico. The Texas Republic claimed a strip of land through the mountains of Colorado. In 1845, Texas bacame a part of the United States with that strip of land. -
John C. Fremont (Colorado)
Lt. John C. Fremont explores the Rocky Mountains for the first time. In 1853, he came back to the Colorado area through San Luis Valley and the Gunnison River. He would make a total of five expeditions west. -
Beet Sugar (Colorado)
They first beet sugar refinery was built in Grand Junction. This allowed people to make sugar from beets. -
World War I (World)
World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. It was the first war to use chemical weapons. By the end in November 1918, 9 million people had been killed. -
Disneyland (US)
After only one year of construction, Disneyland opened. It cost $17 million to build. It only cost $1 to get in (plus extra money to ride the attractions).
