The first legislative assembly of elected represenatives in North America. Was established by the Virginia Company, First meeting. -
Mayflower Compact
The first governing document of Plymoth Colony. SIgned by most adult men. -
Plymouth Rock
The traditional site for where the Plymouth Colony was founded by William Bradford and the Mayflower pilgrims. -
Toleration Act
Also known as the Act Concerning Religion, it was a law mandating religious tolerance for trinitarian Christians. -
Bacon's Rebellion
An armed rebellion in 1676 by Virginia settlers led by Nathaniel Bacon against rule of Governor William Berkeley -
Glorious Revolution
Also called the Revolution of !688, waas the overthrow of King James II by a union of Englsh Parliamentarians with William III of Orange Nassau. -
English Bill of Rights
A restatemet of the Decleration of Rights inviting them to become joint sovereigns with England. It lays down the limits on the powers of the crown and sets out the rights of Parliaments and and rules for freedom of speech in Parliament. -
Salem Witch Trials
A series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in the colonial Massachusetts. -
John Peter Zenger
A German American printer/publisher who worte in a newspaper in New York to voice his disagreements with the trivial policies of newly appointed colonial governor William Cosby. -
French and Indian War
The American name for the the North American version of the Seven Years War. Fought by the American colonists against New France. -
Proclamation of 1763
Forbid the settlers from settling past a line drawn along the Appalachian Mountains. -
Stamp Act
A direct tax by the British Parliament specificaly for the American colonies and required many printed materials be produced on stamped paper produced in London carrying an embossed revenue stamp. -
Quartering Act
Parliament enacted them to order local governments of the American Colonies to provide the British soldiers with any needed accomodations. -
Declaratory Act
An act of the Parliament, which accompanied the repeal of the Stamp Act 1765. -
Boston Massacre
British Army soldiers killed five male civilians and injured six others. Incident on KIng Street. -
Tea Act
To reduce the massive surplus of tea held by the financially troubled Brititsh East India Company and to help the struggling company survive. -
Boston Tea Party
A political protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston. They boarded the ships and threw the chests of tea into the Boston Haror, ruining all of the tea. -
1st Continental Congress
A convention of delegates from twelve colonies (no Georgia) called in response to the passage of the Coercive Acts. -
2nd Continental Congress
A convention of delegates from the 13 colonies that started meeting in the summer of 1975 soon after the American Revolution started. -
Declaration of Independence
A statement adopted by the Continental Congress which announced that the thirteen colonies were regarding themselves as independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. They formed a union that would become a new nation - the United States of America. -
Treaty of Paris
Ended the American Revolution between Great Britain on one side and the United States and its allies on the other side.
