    Nuclear Arms Race Begins
    Ever since the United States dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, the Soviet Union and the US had been in a race to build the most nuclear weapons they could incase they declared war on one another. This started shortly after WWII and hasn't completely ended. Countries still build up their arsenal little by little every year.

  • United Nations is created

    United Nations is created
    The United Nations was created after World War II when the League of Nations failed to prevent it. Because mankind could not afford a World War III, the UN was created.

  • Berlin Airlift Begins

    Berlin Airlift Begins
    When the Berlin Wall was built and the Blockade was established in 1948, it cut off all supplies whatsoever going into West Berlin, which would starve the civilians and cause sickness and/or death. The United States and Britian decided to begin an airlift that would bring the people of West Berlin supplies and materials they needed to survive.

    North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
    NATO was formed in order to help prevent the spread of communism to other countries. The USSR and other communist countries countered this by making the Warsaw Pact.

  • Space Race Begins

    Space Race Begins
    The Space Race was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to see who could launch a satellite into space first, land a man on the moon first, etc. Many people in the US were worried when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, a satellite, into space. They could now guide missles to wherever they wanted.

  • U-2 Incident

    An American spy plane was shot down by the USSR when the piolet was taking photographic evidence of a facility which produced a material used in making nuclear weapons. He was returned home, but the US was caught in a lie about their whereabouts flying over the Soviet Union.

  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    The Bay of Pigs invasion was an unsuccessful action by a CIA-trained force of Cuban exiles to invade southern Cuba, with support and encouragement from the US government, in an attempt to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro.
