Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860. It was a four-way contest but he won because of the electoral college. This is important to the Civil War because Lincoln was trying to stop the spread of slavery and then get rid of it. The South wanted to keep slavery so they didn't like Lincoln. This conflict eventually caused the South to try and secede from the North. -
Confederate States form
The Confederate States form didn't happen at once it was Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana that seceded over time. They left because they wanted to be able to keep slavery and the North was trying to abolish it. This is important to the Civil War because these states leaving led to conflict because Lincoln didn't want them to. Eventually, the conflict caused the Civil War. -
Jefferson Davis inaugurated as President of Confederate States of America
Jefferson Davis became the Confederate president Febuary 18 1861. This is important because it gave the South a leader. He could now decide the actions of the South from now on. The North tried to send supplies to a fort in South Carolina and Davis didn't like this so he resisted. This was the start of the battles of the war. -
Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was the first battle of the war. The Union tried to send supplies to it and the South didn't like that. The South said that if they did show up they would fight back. They showed up and the South fired shots. This set the tone for the war and the Union lost the battle. -

The first battle of Bull Run was important to the Civil War because it was the first major battle. This battle made it clear that this war would last longer than 90 days. This made people take the War seriously and think of it poorly. The South won this battle and people watched, thinking the Union would destroy the South but they were wrong and lost. This made people start to take the South seriously -
Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh lasted two days making it the most deadly battle at the time. This was important to the Civil War because it was the Union´s first victory until that point. After winning that spot it gave the Union a way to attack so it was very helpful. It helped them control the Mississippi river. -
