Lincoln is elected to the Illinois General Assembly as a member of the Whig Party. This was the second time he ran for public office. He then began to study law. -
1836
Lincoln is re-elected in the Illinois general assembly. He receives his license to practice law. He starts this on may 9th. -
1844
Lincoln campaigns for Henry Clay in presidential election.He then dissolves partnership with Logan. After, he sets up his own practice. -
1847
Moves into a boarding house in D.C. On December 6th, Lincoln takes seat in the H.O.R. -
1859
Lincoln loses to Douglas for senator. In fall, Lincoln makes last trip through the 8th judicial circut. -
1860
Lincoln is voted 16th president of the United states. Shortly after, South Carolina secedes from the union. After that 6 more states also secede. -
1862
Lincoln signed act to abolish slavery in District of Columbia. Also signs Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves held in all territories belonging to confederates.Battle of Gettysburg is the turning point of the civil war. -
1865
Lincoln makes last public speech which focuses on problems of reconstruction. Lincoln is assassinated on April 14th in Ford's theater by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln was the man reason why the Union was so successful in the war and his legacy will forever live on
