    Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise was to be unconstitutional because the congress did not have authority to abolish slavery. The North and the South's different views on slavery. Led to the outbreak of the civil war. It balanced the slavery and free states. Slavery was a big deal in the U.S. But it was never as threatening as the Missouri Crisis.

    Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso was not an advocate an abolitionist. He was apart of the free soil party; which was where they freed slaves but they weren't guaranteed freedom. Wilmot was content to slavery happening. Wilmot thought that slavery was taking jobs and that they were taking all of the wage. He wanted every state that was Mexican-American to be slave states so that pushed the Nation closer to the Civil War. His amendment ended on the same day as it started because it failed miserably.

    Compromise of 1850

    The compromise of 1850 had a fugitive slave act. Police could arrest anyone that was accused of being a runaway slave. They would get a trial and all citizens had to help. California was considered a free state. Mexico was divided into New Mexico.

    Fugitive Slave Act

    The fugitive slave act was something where if someone accused you of being a slave or a runaway, you would get arrested. Slaves were to be returned to their owners, even in a free state. If a person was caught aiding/taking in fugitive slaves they would also face repercussions. The law threatened safety of all African Americans, even if they were free, due to the assumption that they were all slaves. This law caused many northerners to become defiant in support of the fugitives.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was written about slavery. It made people brave enough to talk about slavery. It convinced many Northerner's that slavery was wrong. Many people believed that slavery was fake. The book caused problems between the north and the south and that is how it started the civil war.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act

    It slowly caused more and more problems of debate over slavery in the U.S. Douglas made it possible for slavery to expand. Abolitionists got very mad at that. That inspired republicans to be their party and the democrats to be their own. California struck gold and California was a free state. Slaves were entering to work for the gold. That messed up the balance of the free and slave states. So that led up to the civil war.

    Dred V. Sanford

    The Dred Scott Decision outraged abolitionists who saw the supreme court's ruling as a way to stop debating about slavery in territories. He ruled that that Americans of African descent whether slave or freed. It began in 1833 when a surgeon purchased Dred Scott, a slave. Scott would hire himself for jobs so that way in 1840 he could move away and be with his wife. The supreme court ruled against scott because he was a slave and he was owned.

    Pottawatomie Massacre

    This event was an attack on a pro-slavery settlement in Kansas and it was led by abolitionist John Brown. The goal of this attack was to protect the town from slavery supporters. Brown, five of his sons, and two others murdered five of the proslavery men. He believed that the proslavery men intended to destroy the town. This massacre was the start of "Bleeding Kansas" which involved both sides of the conflict attempting to invoke terror and intimidation.

    John Brown's Raid

    John Brown was always fighting the pro-slavery. He always starts arguments and makes the South raid the North. That is what started a lot of the killings he did. He got captured on December 2, 1859 a few months after his raid and they hung him as his execution. When he got executed, that pushed the nation to go closer into the civil war. John Brown marked the end of the compromise of slavery and after he got executed, his war did become the nation's war.

    The Election of 1860

    Abraham Lincoln was only 23 years old and he ran for Illinois House of Representatives. In 1849, he introduced the bill to abolish slavery. There was only 2 people who ran for presidency, Abraham Lincoln and William Seward. Abraham who opposed the expansion of slavery. It led to the succession of several states stopped slavery. It later turned into the beginning of the civil war.
