Lincolns election
The central issue of this election was slavery. Douglas was running for reelection and Lincoln was his opponent in Illinois. This brought up the seven Lincoln-Douglas debates. Douglas had really won the election, but these debates raised Lincoln's political fire. He won in the electoral college by a landslide. -

Battle of Fort Sumter
The bombardment and surrender of Fort sumter. It was near Charleston, South Carolina. This started the american Civil War. -

This was also known as the battle of Manassas by the confederates. It was fought in Virginia near the city of Manassas. Jackson recieved his nickname "Stonewall Jackson" when his group stood their ground after the battle changed course, -
West Virginia becomes a state
Some people from the state were pleased to be part of the United States, and others were not. On seperate sides of the state there were different views. West Virginia broke away from Virginia during the war. This was the only state formed by seceeding from a confederate state. -
Monitor and Merrimack battle
A naval battle of the Civil War. This was the first fight between two ironclad warships. The battle lasted two days. -
Battle of Shiloh
This is also known as the battle of Pittsburg landing. Ulysses S. Grant was the union officer leading the troops on the Tennesee River, and was attacked by confederates. Two day battle, the confederates lost. -
Battle of Antietam
Known as the bloodiest day battle in American history. 23,000 casualties. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
Battle between Robert E. Lee's confederate army of North virginia and the union army of Potomac. Known as one of the most one-sided battles in the American civil war. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The emancipation proclomation was mainly set slaves in the rebelling areas free. Though, this didn't really do anything because the slaves in those states already were basically running around free because of what was going on. -
Battle of Chancelorsville
A major battle in the war. -
Stonewall Jackson killed
He became an icon of Souther heroism. He died of complications due to pneumonia. His death was a severe setback for the confederacy. -
Siege of Vicksburg
This was the final major military action in the Vicksburg campaign.With a series of maneuvers the union army crossed the mississippi river and drove the confederates into a defensive line. This has been thought to be, along with Gettysburg, the turning point in the war. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Three day battle.Had the largest number of casualties in the civil war. This has often been described as the war's turning point. This ended Lee's invasion of the North. -
Battle of Little Round Top
The smaller of two rocky hills south of Gettysburg. The 20th Maine defended it. -
Gettysburg Address
Speech by President Lincoln which was one of the best known speeches in United States history. It was delivered during the American Civil War after the union armies had defeated the confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg. -
Lincoln gets reelected
Democratic nominee was George McClellan who was up against Lincoln. McClellan was likely to negotiate a peace treaty with the Confederacy if he was elected. Lincoln was reelected; five months after the Confederacy was finally defeated. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
Sherman's troops capturing the city of Atlanta, Georgia and ended with the capture of the port of Savannah. This did significant damage. This was huge distruction of civilian property. Sherman defied military principles. -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
Lee realized that cavalry was backed up by two corps of Union infantry, he had no choice but to surrender. The signing of the surrender was in the home of Wilber Mclean. The war has started in his front yard and ended in the backyard. -
Lincolns Assassination
Lincoln was attending fords theater. John Wilkes Booth, an actor, shot him in the back of the head. He died the next morning. -
13th Amendment
This amendment was created to abolish slavery for good. It stated, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.".
