  • Missouri compromise 1820

    *The Missouri Compromise were a bunch of laws that helped maintain the balance between slave and free states.
    *Henry Clay A.K.A The Great Compromiser, settled things by allowing Maine to be a free state and Arkansas be a slave state.
  • The Nullification Crisis 1832

    *Southern states believed that tariffs werent fair and only supported the North.
    *Even though John C.Calhoun said that any state can nullify any federal law, the Federal Government rejected South Carolinas arguement that they had the right to reject any federal law.
  • Compromise of 1850

    *After the war we had with Mexico, Congress had arguements as to whether the new territories won from Mexico would be free or slave states.
    *Once again Henry Clay created a compromise for this dilemma.
    -California would be a free state, and the slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C.
    -Congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories won from Mexico.
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    *Congress passed the Fugitive SAlve Act in 1850. It permitted the capturing of African Americans who have moved north to escape.
  • Bleeding Kansas 1855

    *5000 people from proslavery Missouri came and votedfor proslavery representatives in Kansas illegally. After that, Kansas had a proslavery legislature.
    *people who supported slavery started there own governmant.
    *To avenge this attack, a strong abolitionist (John Brown) murdered several of his proslavery neighbors.
  • Dred Scott's Decision

    *On this day in 1857, the United States Supreme Court issues a decision in the Dred Scott case, affirming the right of slave owners to take their slaves into the Western territories, thereby negating the doctrine of popular sovereignty and severely undermining the platform of the newly created Republican Party.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry 1859

    *John Brown planned to capture the arsenalat the army base in Harpers Ferry, Virginia to arm slaves. He did this to to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom.
    *He attempted to arm the slaves but got captured and 10 of his men were killed.
    *Abolitionists saluted John Brown as he was put to death.
  • The election of 1860

    *Even though the south did not trust Abraham Licoln because he said he would do nothing to abolish slavery in the south, he won the election.
    *Shortly after Lincoln is elected, the Southern States quickly begin to secede from the union.
