Emancipation Proclamation
Following the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln found the ultimate opening to push the anti slave agenda. The goals of the Union shifted from keeping the Union together to abolishing slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation. Although it did not guarantee a slave’s freedom, it pushed for it. -
Black Codes
In late 1865, segregation began to become extremely common. Whites and Blacks were laundry, separated everywhere. These were known as Black Codes or Jim Crow laws. -
Lincoln’s Assassination
About two weeks after the Civil War ended, President Lincoln made the decision to attend a play. Little did he know, there he would meet his fate at the hand of John Wilkes Booth. Booth succeeded in assassinating President Lincoln, but was killed 12 days later. -
Reconstruction Act
The South was divided into 5 military districts. It required that states who wanted to be administered pass the 14th amendment. As soon as the military left, the south pretty much went back to their old ways.
