    Underground RailroadThe underground railroad was a term used to call the routes that the slaves used to become free and escape from their masters. This divided the north and south a lot more because the North were helping the slaves escape against the laws that were made already.

    Mexican American War

    Mexican American WarAmerica sent troops into mexico to fight for California's independence. After they got the land that they wanted all that was left to handle was the terms of peace. The war was finally solved when they signed the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. As a result America recieved the Texan territory, New Mexico territory, and California. The Whigs of the north complained that is was unconstitutional. There was also the complication of deciding if the new land would become slave states or not.

    Wilmot ProvisoThe North people disliked having slaves in America and didn't want the new land they got from mexico to become slave states. They tried to make rules saying that there couldn't be slaves there and this failed the many times that it was introduced

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850This was part of the Compromise of 1850. This declared that all runaway slaves had to be brought back to their masters. This was the biggest controversy involved with the Compromise of 1850.

    Compromise of 1850In this compromise they tried to make both the South and the North happy. The North gained California as a free state, slave trade was prohibited in Washington D.C., gained some of the land from the south to be free. The South gained no slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico, They also could have slaves in Washington D.C. Texas got $10 million. They also got the fugitive slave law. This further seperate the North and South with the slave problems.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin This was a book written about a slave's life and all the tragedys that went along with him being a slave. There were about 300,000 copies produced. The people in the north mainly read this book and this made them feel horrible about what the slaves went through and this made them want to abolish slave and split the north and south even more

    Ostend Manifesto This was a document that was supposed to explain the reasons on why we wanted Cuba from spain. This was to show that if spain rrefused to let America buy Cuba that America could rationalise that fighting for the land was not going to be horrible.

    Kansas - Nebraska Act This would allow each territory to declare by itslef what they would chose to do reguarding slaves. They would declare this by the highest vote from the people living there. The north got really angry by this because this would allow the compromise of 1850 to be ignored any state even in the north could now become a slave state if the majority wanted slaves.

They could not decide which to chose after the Kansas nebraska act was made and they got to vote for themselves. After the little battle the state became free and this battle helped start the civil war.

    canning of charles sumner Brooke was mad at a speech that Charles sumner made about Butler his relative and went to Charles and beat him with a cane. Brooke was reelected to office and so was Charles even though he could not physically be there due to his injures these action to Charles angered the north and made the divison even worse.

    The Dred Scott Decision Dred Scott was a slave but lived in a free slave state. He took them to court and got a really weird response. He was told the due to the 5th admendment that they could not legally keep anyone from having there property (slaves) in any state there fore declaring the comprmise of 1850 unconstitutional. Now the compromises didnt have to be followed and that angered the north.

    John Brown's Raid John Brown was a white male. He wanted to start a slave revolt and was kind of a success.
