After Johnson ignored the congress and formally dismissed him, the Congress took a vote to have Andrew impeached. On February 24, 1869, The House of Representatives impeached Andrew Johnson with a vote of 126-47.

    Rutherford B. Hayes became president on November seventh, 1876. This election was one of the most disputed elections in American History. This holds true to the fact that Hayes opponent, Tilden, won the popular vote 184-165 still knowing that 20 electoral votes were left uncounted. The 20 votes were given to Hayes after a bittersweet political and legal battle.In the end it ended up being that Hayes won the election 185-184.
