Missouri Compromise
The north and south got upset about over growth of slavery. So Henry Clay, also know as the great compromiser, stepped in and figured it out. He came up with a series of laws that would keep the free slave states and states that had slaves, even. It was the missouri compromise line, on the 36 30'. -
Nullification Crisis
Southern states, like South Carolina felt that the tariffs were unfair and they only supported the Northern part of the US. Vice President John C Calhoun said any state could void a law that they thought was unconstitutional. Eventually, Henry Clay come up with a compromise and lowered the tarrifs. -
Compromise of 1850
After the war with Mexico, congress got heated again with their debates about the new territories from mexico would be free or slave. Once again, Henry Clay helped make a compromise between the North and the South. They said California would be a free state and wouldnt make laws to ban slavery from the other territories. -
Fugitive Slave act
In 1850 the congress passed the fugitive slave act. It demanded the capture of African-Americans that fled north for freedom. These laws added tension, and set the stage for John Brown's Raid and the American Civil War. -
Bleeding Kansas
Before Kansas was going to enter the Union, there was going to be an election of an official state legislature. 5000 proslavery people showed up to Kansas, they voted for slavery illegally. Due to that, Kansas had a proslavery legislature. As a result of that, anti-slavery started their own government. Then the proslavery attacked the anti-slavery. Avenge to this attack, John Brown murdered several of his pro slvaery neighbors. -
Attack on Harpers ferry
John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to earn and fight for their freedom. Brown planned to capture the arsenal at the army base in Harpers Ferry, Virginia to arm the slaves. Brown sent word to rally slaves, yet no one followed. Him and his slaves we captured, and ten of them were killed. Abolitionists saluted John Brown as he was put to death, this issue of slavery had raised tensions in America .. to its the breaking point.
