Missouri compromise 1820
They developed a solution that would solve the problem The Missouri Compromise seemed to solve the problem by admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, keeping the number of free and slave states equal. It also divided the rest of the Louisiana Purchase into slave and free territory. -
The Manifest destiny
The manifest destiny is considered a cause of the civil war because their was a conflict with whether the newly obtained land from mexico would be slave states or free states. The southern slave owners felt that the the land obtained from mexico in the manifest dynasty would make the slave trading industry flourish. But the northern states felt that the southern slaves owners wanted to make the entire nation a slave empire -
Mexican American war
America went to war with mexico so they can gain terrortories in the south west. The united states won the war and aquired a lot of land from mexico. This will lead to the civil war because
with all that land that was aquired the northern states wanted it to be free territory while the southern states wanted it to be slave territory. -
compomise of 1850
The united states decided Texas would relinquish the land in dispute but, in compensation, be given 10 million dollars, money it would use to pay off its debt to Mexico. Also New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah would be organized without mention of slavery. In washington slavery was abolished except in one district. California would be admitted as a free state and the fugitive slave act was passed. This led to the civil war because the south wanted slave states and the north, free states. -
Frederick Douglass's "What to the Slave is the 4th of July?" speech
Fredrick douglass made a speech callsed "what is the fourth of july to the slave". Frederick douglass felt that the fourth of july to the slave is the remembrance of the of cruelty and injustice of when African americans were slaves. He feels that for the African americans it is an time to remember the inequality and the fourth of july is a mockery to blacks. This led to the civil war becuse southern states did not agree with the speech. -
kansas-nebraska act of 1850
create the kansas nebraska act which divided the northern and southern parts the territory into nebraska and kansas which would be open to slavery if the population allowed it. -
Stephen Douglas vs Abraham Lincoln debates of 1858
In 1858 Abraham Lincoln says that residents cant ban slavery through popular sovereignty because that only gives them the right to have slavery if they want it but any body is still has the decision to own them. Stephan Douglas feels that popular sovereignty can limit slavery bacause the people have the right to abolish it if they want to. This will create an even larger division between the north and south states. -
Dred scott decision
Dred scott was born into slavery and had been taken to massechusetts by his owner. He pleaed to the cout that he was a freeman but he lost. This made the northern states upset because they felt that the case was unfair and they only wanted the slaves to be free because they thought it was not right. -

In 1860 following Abraham Lincolns election the southern states were furious so the decided to leave the united states of america. By the end of 1860 11 states suceded from the united states all of them being in the south. -
electoin 1860
in 1860 abraham lincoln won the election based on popular vote by 40% and Abraham won the electoral college vote by a staggering 59 percent. He was the front runner for the republican party with most of his supporters comming from the north. This led to the civil war because southerners feared that abraham would abolish slavery for good.
